First Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant for Sickle Cell Anemia in AP

Successfully undertook hematopoietic stem cell transplant for a case of severe sickle cell anemia in a 16-year-old boy. This marks the first such treatment in Andhra Pradesh.

Some unique aspects of this case are - this is haplo (half) match transplant making it that much more complicated; chemotherapy isn't used in conditioning, thereby preventing future risks for this young boy including chances of infertility. Instead of chemo, we used Alemtuzumab and Total body irradiation of 4gy which patient had consummate ease in tolerating.

Chimerism analysis at end of 1 month of transplant showed only 5% of recTepient DNA, indicating an uptake of 95% of donor DNA which is quite good end bargain for what we set out to do.
